Why do I need the app?

WXStar includes built-in Starlink connection management that periodically reconnects the Starlink Mini to fetch fresh weather data. This is what allows WXStar to work with the cheapest available Starlink plan instead of the expensive aviation plans.

The downside: during the brief offline interval between reconnects, the Starlink Mini WiFi disappears. SkyDemon may interpret this as a GPS or traffic source loss and show a warning or stop displaying weather.

The WXStar app bridges that gap for SkyDemon. It runs in the background on your phone or tablet, listens on the side to the normal WXStar GDL90 broadcasts, and only starts sending when that stream pauses during a Starlink reconnect.

When Starlink stays online continuously, the app is not required — the GDL90 stream flows directly and continuously. But whenever WXStar uses its reconnect logic because your aircraft is beyond the speed limit of the active Starlink plan, the app can help keep SkyDemon connected during those reconnects.

What exactly does the app do?

  • Passive monitoring: while WXStar is broadcasting GDL90 normally, the app only listens. It does not sit between WXStar and SkyDemon and does not relay the live stream.
  • Gap filler: when the WXStar GDL90 broadcast briefly stops during a Starlink reconnect, the app starts sending minimal GDL90 data (including GPS position from your device) so SkyDemon stays connected until the WXStar broadcast resumes.
  • Automatic: once configured, the app works in the background. No interaction needed during flight.
  • Free: the app has no cost and no in-app purchases.

Which EFB app should I use it with?

The intended use case is SkyDemon. ForeFlight usually handles short GDL90 interruptions from WXStar quite well without this app. Garmin Pilot normally listens to the regular WXStar GDL90 broadcast; using the WXStar app in parallel may interfere with that reception path and is not recommended.

Other GDL90-compatible apps may work, but SkyDemon is the focus for this companion app.

Requirements

  • iPhone, iPad, or Android device
  • WXStar hardware installed and powered on
  • Your phone or tablet connected to the Starlink Mini WiFi network
  • SkyDemon configured for GDL90 as shown in the WXStar app
  • A Starlink plan where WXStar may need to reconnect, for example Standby, Travel, or occasional operation above a 300 MPH plan limit

Setup

  1. Install the WXStar app from the App Store or direct Android APK download above.
  2. Connect your phone or tablet to the Starlink Mini WiFi network.
  3. Open the WXStar app — it will detect the WXStar hardware automatically.
  4. In SkyDemon, configure GDL90 using the address and port shown in the WXStar app.
  5. Fly. The app runs in the background from this point on.

Do I need the app if I have an aviation Starlink plan?

If the Starlink connection stays online continuously, normally no. WXStar broadcasts GDL90 continuously and SkyDemon connects to it directly — no companion app required.

The important point is not only the plan name, but whether WXStar has to use its reconnect logic. This usually happens on Standby or Travel plans, but it can also happen with an Aviation 300 MPH plan if the aircraft is temporarily faster than the plan allows. In those situations the WXStar app can keep SkyDemon connected while WXStar reconnects.
