WXStar - EFB Apps via WiFi
WXStar broadcasts all weather data in GDL90 format on the Starlink Mini’s local WiFi network. Any GDL90-compatible EFB app running on your iPad or phone picks it up automatically once connected to that WiFi.
Compatible apps:
There are two scenarios depending on your Starlink plan. Both work; the second requires the free WXStar iOS app.
With a Starlink Aviation 300 MPH, 450 MPH, or Jet plan, the Starlink Mini stays connected throughout the flight. WXStar broadcasts GDL90 continuously on that WiFi network. No additional app needed - it just works.
One-time setup: connect your iPad or phone to the Starlink Mini WiFi network, then configure your EFB app to receive GDL90 (see the app-specific pages linked above for screenshots and step-by-step instructions).
With a cheaper Standby or Travel plan, WXStar uses its integrated power switch to periodically reconnect the Starlink Mini and fetch a fresh weather update. During the brief offline interval between reconnects, the Starlink Mini WiFi is unavailable, which would normally cause a gap in your EFB weather display.
The WXStar iOS app bridges this gap. It runs on your iPad or iPhone alongside your EFB app. While Starlink is connected, the app forwards the GDL90 stream to your EFB app. When Starlink briefly goes offline, the app sends a heartbeat and GPS position to keep your EFB connected.
The result: you get a continuous EFB experience on a plan that costs around $5/month instead of $250/month or more.
